Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer a “same day” service?

As a general rule we do not offer a same day service. However, if you were to call us between 6:00am and 9:00am, there may be a chance that we can fit you in that day. I suppose the best answer to this question is yes and no. It just depends on our schedule at the time. At certain times of the year, when we are not so busy, the possibility of getting a “same day” service is very high. In the warmer months, we usually do our schedule at least 7 days in advance. But there is still a chance that we can fit in last minute jobs if we get cancellations or reschedules.

So if you need a job done on that day, please call us. But please don’t be disappointed if we are not available that day.

How often should I mow my lawn?

To maintain a healthy lawn, regular mowing is essential. For best results we recommend the following service intervals in ideal conditions.

Mid September to may –  every 1-2 weeks

June to Mid September – every 4 weeks

I don’t have any money on me. Can you come by later and pick it up?

Yes. And we will appreciate the little extra you give us to cover our fuel costs and time.

I have dogs. Will you still mow my lawns?

I am happy to mow your lawns if you have a dog. However, dogs and other outdoor pets raise a few health and safety concerns that will need to be addressed before I will consider taking on any such job.

  • For the safety of the pet(s) and myself, I require that all pets are secure and out of harm’s way before I enter the property.
  • ALL droppings must be removed on the day and before I start the job.
  • Any holes that have been dug will need to be filled as they can cause pretty serious injury to myself and damage to my equipment
  • The lawn must be cleared of any chew toys or bones before I start the job. Although I am fully insured, I take no responsibility for any damage caused to your property by any hard object left on the lawn.

I work during the day. So how can I pay you?

We accept cash or direct deposit via internet banking or any NAB branch. So if you can’t be home, you can pay directly into our account or leave the cash in a secret location.

If you are in St Clair, Colyton, Erskine Park or SOUTH St Marys,  we may, on occasion,  even be able to come by and pick up the money after hours.

Our lawns need doing URGENTLY! Can you help us?

Over the years we have heard this too many times to count. The answer is Yes we may be able to help you. But if that translates to “we have a rent inspection today and we haven’t done the lawns for 6 months”, please be prepared to pay up to $300 or more. And please don’t be offended if we decline the job.

We have a pretty good idea of how fast grass grows and are of the opinion that there really is no such thing as a lawn that needs to be mowed urgently.

In short, plan ahead and be prepared or be prepared to pay big. Yes grass does grow over night. But it usually takes 14 days or more for it to get out of hand. That leaves plenty of time to organise for someone to come and do it for you.

So what is the difference between a regular and casual service?

In a nutshell, if you are on a regular service, we let you know when we will be there. And if you are on a casual service, you let us know when you need us to come.

We don’t have any money this week. Can you put our lawns off until next week?

Our prices for lawn mowing are based on 2 weekly mowing in peak season. If for any reason, you need to put the mowing of your lawns off for any period beyond 2 weeks (in peak growing season), there will be an additional charge at the rate of half your normal rate per week.

For example if your normal rate is $50 per fortnight for your lawns and you need to leave it 3 weeks instead of 2, it will cost you $75. If you leave it 4 weeks, it will cost $100 and so on.

We do however understand that sometimes things come up and lawn mowing is not always the number 1 priority. In these cases we would much rather mow the lawns on schedule and come to some arrangement for payment to be made at a later date.  All we ask is that you give us prior notice of your situation so we can come to some arrangement before we do the job.

Please be aware that we do not provide credit and special arrangements will only be offered, at our discretion, to clients we have been servicing on a regular basis for a minimum of 3 months.

What are the benefits of mulching?

Grass leaves consist of around 70%-85% water. So it makes sense to put that water back into the lawn rather than bagging it and throwing it in a land fill.

Grass clippings also contain:

  • around 4% Nitrogen
  • around 1.5% Phosphorus
  • around 3% Potassium
  • small amounts of other trace elements

This is the same make up as most common lawn fertilizers. So regular mulching, in effect is like keeping your lawn well fed and watered. Regularly mulched lawns still benefit from using fertilizers. But they don’t need it as often. This saves you time and money!

Lawns that are mulched regularly tend to withstand the extremes of our Western Sydney conditions much better than those that are not mulched.

Mulching helps to prevent browning due to frosts in winter. It also helps to retain vital moisture in the lawn in the heat of summer.

Lawn clippings when caught, bagged and dumped in large quantities take a long time to decompose. Another major benefit of mulching is that it keeps tonnes of lawn clippings from being dumped into landfill each year. So mulching is also beneficial for the environment.

What do you mean by “overgrown lawn”?

This will depend largely on the length, “thickness”, type of grass etc. Sometimes a lawns can be a bit long but not terribly overgrown. Sometimes small areas may be overgrown but the lawn in general is “not too bad”. Every lawn is different and we like to carefully inspect each job before we give a firm price.  But as a general guide we use the following to determine the state of the lawn:-

  • If the grass it is above ankle height we class it as a slightly overgrown lawn.
  • A lawn that is around Shin Height is an overgrown lawn.
  • A lawn that is around Knee height is a completely overgrown lawn.
  • A lawn that is above knee height, or if the grass is so long that it has fallen over and continued to grow,  is classed as a jungle and will cost large amounts of money to tame. Please respect our right to decline such a job depending on our schedule and weather conditions.

See how often should I mow my lawn for a guide on how to avoid letting your lawns become overgrown.

What do you mean by a “casual service”?

In the past I have offered casual services to those who wish to call me when they need me.

Unfortunately this is not working due to too many people abusing my flexibility. As a result I am no longer offering a casual service as such. Those who are not on a regular scheduled service will now be treated as one off clients and charged accordingly.

What do you mean by a regular mowing service?

Clients on our regular service are permanently booked in our system. This means that if you become a regular client of Fair Dinkum Lawn and Garden Care, you won’t have to worry about your lawns…at all…EVER! We arrive on the arranged day, do our business and you come home to a nice freshly mowed lawn.

We do our best to do our regular clients lawns later in the week so they are looking their best for the weekend.

Regular clients also get priority service leading up to major public holiday periods such as Christmas and Easter.

These are just a few benefits of becoming “a regular”.

We pride ourselves on reliability and our regular clients understand this. Becoming a regular client of Fair Dinkum Lawn and Garden Care is like becoming part of the family. We take care of your lawns so you can take care of the finer things in life.

What is meant by the term mulching or mulch mowing?

At Fair Dinkum Lawn and Garden Care we use specially designed Honda lawn mowers. These machines have a high powered 4 blade cutting system which chops the clippings up much finer than a regular twin blade system. When set in mulching mode the clippings are returned to the lawn as mulch. On a well maintained lawn it is not easy to tell that the clippings have actually been returned to the lawn. In fact, it is quite common for a lawn to look much greener after mulching as opposed to catching.

What payment options are available?

We accept the following payment methods:-

  • Cash
  • Direct deposit via internet or phone banking
  • Branch deposit

Please note that for new customers we strongly prefer cash. If paying electronically we will need to see a receipt before we commence work.

For regular customers we can invoice you but we require payment “on the day” or preferably the day before. We are not a bank and do not provide credit. Those who do not pay on time or “forget” to pay may be refused our services in the future.

How much will it cost to have my lawns mowed

It’s a bit hard to say without me looking at the lawn. However I have put together a rough price guide which can be found by following the link below.
