Every now and then I get a call for a job where the grass is well past the ankles and the weeds are nearly head high. This was one of those jobs. A proper jungle clean-up — the kind that takes time, care, and a fair bit of machinery to get right.
In this case, the owner lives interstate and the property was his mother’s place. She hasn’t been well and isn’t living there at the moment, so the yard had simply got away from the family while they were dealing with much bigger things. That’s how it goes sometimes — life gets in the way, and the lawn becomes the last thing on anyone’s mind. Two of us tackled it over five hours, working through long grass, thick weeds, and all the bits and pieces that get hidden underneath when a yard gets that far gone. You’ve got to be careful in those conditions — bottles, cans, bits of old pipe, you name it. The last thing you want is a stone or bit of metal flying through a window.
Front yard and nature strip
This was the first thing you saw from the street — tall grass and weeds completely taking over the front and the side path. The mailbox was practically swimming in it:

And after we’d slashed it back, trimmed the edges and mowed it down:

Driveway
Even the driveway down the side of the house had grass growing right across it:

Once the edges were done and the drive was clear, it actually looked usable again:

Front of garage and trampoline
The concrete area in front of the garage had become its own little ecosystem — weeds up through the cracks, grass encroaching from the edges, and the trampoline sitting in the middle of it all. Weeds were head high in places, and the grass was thick and dry:

Once it was all slashed back and cleared out, you could actually walk around the garage again:

Side of garage and main backyard
This was the main backyard space down the side of the garage. The grass was well past knee high and thick enough to hide anything. You can see the trampoline and slide off to the side — the sort of area where you’ve got to take your time and work methodically:

After running the slasher and mower through, it opened right up. The shed was accessible, the kids’ play area was usable, and the whole backyard felt twice the size:

The back corner
The back corner still had thick, dry growth and a swing set half-buried in weeds. This was one of those spots where you really have to go slow and make sure nothing’s hiding in the grass:

With the bulk knocked down and the edges trimmed, it finally looked like a backyard again:

Why it’s worth getting it done properly
Jobs like this are hard yakka, but the difference is always worth it. The family were happy with the result — so happy they’ve now booked us in for regular maintenance to keep it under control. That’s really the best outcome: turn a one-off clean-up into an easy-care yard that stays manageable all year round, so they can focus on what matters most.
If your place has got away from you, you’re managing a property from interstate, or you’re looking after a family member’s home while they deal with illness or other challenges — please don’t stress. We do this sort of work regularly around Colyton, St Clair, Erskine Park and surrounding suburbs, and we’re not here to judge. We’re here to help get things back on track.
