The lawns are going mental right now

Clean lawn and edges in Western Sydney

I don’t know about your place, but around Colyton, St Clair and Erskine Park the lawns are absolutely going mental at the moment.

We’ve had warm weather well into March and a decent bit of rain to go with it. That combination is basically rocket fuel for grass. I was out in St Clair yesterday and some of the lawns I’d done a fortnight ago already looked like they needed doing again.

This is the thing about autumn in Western Sydney — a lot of people assume that because summer is winding down, the grass will start slowing down too. And eventually it will. But right now, with the soil still warm and the moisture soaking in, the roots are loving life.

If you’re on a fortnightly schedule, you might want to think about bumping that up to weekly for the next few weeks. Or at the very least, don’t let it go any longer than two weeks. I’ve had a few calls lately from people who left it three or four weeks and honestly, it’s not a pretty sight. Thick, heavy, wet growth is slow to mow, hard on the equipment, and it’ll cost you more to sort out.

The good news is that once the overnight temperatures start dropping consistently — usually by late April or May — things will settle right down and the winter schedule kicks in.

But until then, keep on top of it. Your lawn (and your lawn mowing bloke) will thank you for it.
