Do this now before winter sneaks up on you

Lawn mowed, edged and fertilised — ready for the cooler months

Winter is still a few weeks away but it’ll be here before you know it. And autumn is honestly the best time to do a few things that’ll make a real difference to how your lawn comes through the colder months.

Here’s what I’d be doing right now if it were my lawn:

Get a fertiliser in the ground

Mid to late autumn is the ideal time for a slow-release fertiliser application. The soil is still warm enough to take it up, and it’ll give your grass a bit of a store to draw on through winter when things slow right down. You don’t need anything fancy — a good quality lawn fertiliser from Bunnings will do the job. Water it in well after applying.

Don’t let the edges get away from you

This is the one that always gets neglected once it starts getting a bit cold. Edges that creep over the footpath in winter can be a nightmare to bring back in spring. It’s much easier to keep on top of them now than to try and reclaim them later.

Watch out for clover and bindii

As the grass starts to slow down, weeds see it as an open invitation. Clover in particular can take hold fast once the lawn stops competing hard. If you’re seeing it starting to appear, now is a good time to get a selective herbicide down or just get in there and pull it out before it establishes.

Keep mowing — just less often

A lot of people stop mowing altogether in winter and then wonder why their lawn looks terrible in spring. Even through the cooler months, I’d recommend mowing every three to four weeks to remove dead material, keep weeds down, and let some airflow into the lawn.

If you need a hand with any of this — or just want someone reliable to take care of it all for you — get in touch. That’s what I’m here for.
