Now that we've had a bit of rain you are probably noticing your lawn, that you thought was dead, is coming back to life.

But, don't wait until it gets long before you start mowing again. The best thing you can do now is to give it a light mow and get back into your regular mowing schedule.

You can also give ita bit of fertiliser and/or some seaweed solution. Seasol Powerfeed is great stuff.

With water restrictions still in place, something like Scott's Lawn Builder is a good option for fertiliser, because you can just throw it down and wait for rain. It doesn't have to be watered in right away.

At this time of year, I often get complaints that I am cutting the grass "too low". I get where people are coming from.However the problem is generally the fact that, yes, I am taking way too much grass off when I mow, even though i have the mower blades set at the highest possible setting.

And the reason for this is that the lawns are left too long between cuts.

Most lawns in summer should be mowed at least once a week in spring/summer. A healthy buffalo should probably really be done every 3 or 4 days for best results.

Sadly, I think people are either generally misinformed by the turf suppliers or they misinterpret the information.

Letting the grass get too long and taking more than 1/3 of the leaf off stresses the lawn and leads to thatch build up which leads to the problem of the mower wheels sinking deep into the thatch, thus causing the blades to "scalp" the lawn, thus exposing the roots to be exposed to the elements and leading to big problems for the lawn.

The unfortunate thing is that I know I am not doing the best thing for these lawns by leaving them too long between cuts. But when it comes down to affordability, there's really nothing I can do about it other than raise the blades as high as they go and hope I don't cause too much damage.
